The Scottish Government hit the headlines this week by including Porridge Oats in their list of junk food that they are trying to regulate the promotion of.
They’ve had to do a big back pedal to explain they meant processed oats. I expect they’ve ‘fuelled’ the Tik Tok craze of Oatmeal being ‘peasant food’ and to be avoided 🤦♀️
What they meant to say is non whole grain oats.
Porridge oats, 100% unprocessed oats contain betaglucan for heart health and lots of fibre for your microbiome. Add in protein like nuts 🌰 and antioxidants like blueberries 🫐 and a pinch of cinnamon and it’s a health promoting food 👌🏻
Instant porridge, granola, oat products are all basically sugar . Adding sugar or syrup or honey to porridge turns it into dessert and will spike your blood sugar and leave you hungry quickly.
Eating wholegrains is good for our health. Just ensure they’ve not been processed and the health benefits lost.
